I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, went to
Art school, moved to Northern Spain to surf / teach english for 2 years, back
to S.F., got into band, "Swell", 4 cds and numerous European tours
(we"re big over there man), followed with living / painting / playing
music stints in Paris, Brussels, London, Santa Cruz, three returns to Santa
Barbara, another Swell album, Ventura, back to SF/Marin, and now Santa
Barbara again, to raise my boy Sage.
Through it all, I managed to pick up a bunch of colors, images and the need
to put it all on paper. What you see kind of parallels the last few years.
That, I guess, is why art is created: the need to share those moods.
I could go on about education, past exhibits, etc., but that seems irrelevant
as I sit here typing this up. What is pertinent, is what you, the viewer get
out of these pieces. My paintings / pastels are about mood, atmosphere,
colors. Taking the ordinary daily objects and giving them the ambience that
we usually miss in our hurried pace. Everything has an undiscovered energy,
and hopefully, these pieces reflect that.
INFLUENCES: Edward Munch, Early Picasso, Sun-drenched faded walls of Southern
France, "Dark Side", "Animals", "Wish You Were
Here", Harold Budd/Brian Eno's "The Pearl", Dub: Big Youth,
King Tubby, "Augustus Pablo meets Rockers Uptown", 70s funk while
cooking a good meal’glass of wine in hand. Big Band from the 30s-40s, early
morning/late eve surf sessions, Sage, and long walks with nothing on my mind
except the next painting.
"The Gaviota / Central Coast is a mighty powerful place to be. Through
my travels, experiences, I have always come back to it . The ever pressing
development is a major concern and rather sad ordeal really. In my works alot
of love for this part of the world is present, and an outstretched hand to
see the beauty of what lies here and is always unfortunately
threatened."
A member of the Santa Barbara Art Association, I've exhibited in Santa
Barbara, Los Angeles, San Francisco & The Bay Area, and London. To date,
there are more than 400 pieces floating around out there in people's lives,
and that makes me feel okay about what I'm doing.
Enjoy...
